The kestrel is a type of bird. They are the smallest and most colorful of the falcons with rust-colored tails and backs, dark eyes, white cheeks and white chin patches. The tops of their heads are blue with rusty caps. Adult males have pale blue-gray wings, while females' wings are rusty. The wings are long and pointed, and the tail is long.
Kestrels fly with rapid wing-beats and short glides and they can reach speeds of up to 40 mph. While hunting they have the unique ability to hover and then dive at very high speeds. Kestrels require a high perch for spotting prey and seem to take a particular liking to perching on telephone poles and utility wires.
Unlike larger falcons, kestrels have adapted to man and can be found in large cities and parks as well as farmlands and open country. Kestrels will even nest in birdhouses or boxes made especially for them. The cold doesn't bother these birds very much and all but the most northern birds winter near their home ranges.
The kestrel is small, fast and efficient. It is beautiful but not showy. And, it adapts easily to new situations. Our web design company adopted the kestrel as our mascot because, even though we are a small company, we strive to achieve the same feeling of elegance, strength and adaptability in all of our projects that a kestrel represents.
